Over the years though, sushi's popularity has grown and there are now a fair number of options for the discerning (and perhaps daring) epicurean. One of the newest offerings is Mitaka Restaurant. Located in the Paxtang area of Harrisburg at 560 S 29th Street, Mitaka is easily accessible from both the East and West Shores. Mitaka is the newest choice from restaurateur Caroline Lai, who owns restaurants in Center City, Carlisle, and York, so you'd expect a tried and true formula. You'd be expecting wrong though - at least partly. Mitaka is the first of Caroline's restaurants to offer dim sum. In fact, while it is popular in the big cities, Mitaka is one of the first in this area to specialize in it. ![]() Mitaka is easy to spot from 29th street and offers ample parking. In addition to a nice sized dining area there is a handsomely decorated standard sushi bar. ![]() Pictured is a plate of sashimi. If you like raw fish, this is the way to go. If you've never tried it before, it's not as bad as you may think. In fact, its quite good. Just mix some soy sauce and wasabi ("waaaassssabbi") in a small dish and give it a dip before taking a bite. Don't be afraid... it won't bite you back (unless of course you overdo the wasabi). Rice Rolls with Shrimp. The Tropical Inferno Roll is certainly cool to look at. It is a rice roll with smoked salmon, mango, shrimp, masago & scallion topped with avocado, tobiko, and a spicy sauce. Other the fact that sushi is just so good to eat, it is like edible art. Each sushi roll is a mini sculpture specially made just for you. ![]() This image shows a couple sushi and handrolls. Clockwise from top left: Tamago Sushi (I've long considered this to be a dessert in sushi restaurants, though may be shunned for such an opinion), Tobiko Sushi (the kids chowed this before I could even try them - I didn't tell them what it was), Salmon Handroll, and an Eel & Cucumber Handroll. You just have to love the color and texture of the Tobiko (at least to look at if not eat). 560 S 29th Street Harrisburg, PA 17104 717-920-1818 10:30AM-9:30PM (7 Days) non-smoking BYOB Map It Labels: dim sum, feature, Harrisburg restaurant, mitaka, non-smoking, paxtang, sushi photography © Tom Wenger Photography, LLC posted by Tom Wenger at 1:08 AM 0 comments Why don't we see any customers in most of these shots? In an effort to work with restaurants in a convenient manner, we schedule our shoots for their "dead" times. You will just have to imagine them full of paying customers... and yourself. Can we expect to get food that looks this good? Certainly the chef's know that their food is getting photographed, but regardless, this is the real stuff and the "tricks" you may have heard that food photographers employ have not been used here. No matter what we are photographing we try to make it look its best through lighting. And to top it off, we do it all on location, not back in the studio. Why haven't you featured (your favorite restaurant here)? We are working our way through the area restaurants. We are providing a free advertising service to them and asking nothing in return, so we schedule shoots as time allows. Restaurants are scheduled on a first come first served basis. I own/manage a restaurant. How do I get my establishment featured? Please see our "Welcome to Susqueats" page. Why did you choose to photograph (enter item here) when (enter restaurant here) makes a really great (enter other item here)? We allow the restaurant to choose which items we photograph. We ask them to pick items that will show off what their place is all about. What you see is what the chef/owner decided to prepare. This may not be the site to visit if your tummy is already rumbling at 4:50PM when your boss has just called for an emergency after-work-hours meeting. Our goal is to cover the Susquehanna Valley food scene in a way that no other medium has attempted. We plan on bringing you compelling mouth-watering photography along with general dialogue featuring the foods we (as in you, me, all of us) eat. We want to be your number one resource when determining where you want to spend your dining dollars. While our plan is not to offer reviews as much, but rather give you the general feel of what the establishment has to offer. In addition we may be able to coax some of the secret recipes out of the proprietors and chefs and share them with you. We may delve into the personalities of those who we rely on to sate our hunger or quench our thirst. And maybe (just maybe) we will offer a little humor along the way.Susqueats will be a work in progress, and develop as we go. Your feedback will help mold the future of the site.
